What is High Definition Web Design?

Simply put, HD web design is used to maximize the image quality available from a higher density of pixels per inch (ppi or dpi). Anything greater than 200ppi is considered HD. The bulk of devices available up until recently operated at the web’s standard density of 72ppi. Here are where some of the latest devices stand:

  • iPhone 6 +: 401ppi
  • iPad Retina & Air: 264ppi
  • iPad Mini: 326ppi
  • Samsung Galaxy S5: 432ppi
  • Samsung Galaxy S6: 577ppi
  • HTC One M9: 441ppi
  • LG G3: 534ppi

The new Retina iMac, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air all offer around 220ppi.

High Definition Web Design: The Trade Offs

High definition image files are larger, resulting in slower loading times. Standard 72ppi images look lousy on high definition devices when compared to high definition images.
